I am not buying my eldest a Halloween costume this year and she is thrilled! We had a wonderful time today going through her costumes drawer with the idea in mind we would attempt not to purchase a costume for her this year, but accessorize something she already owned. She chose her favorite princess dress (I should have known), high-heels and she debated whether a princess would wear a crown or a bow while trick-or-treating. She never did make up her mind, so we tried out both.
A child’s innocence can lead to embarrassment or selfish behaviors sometimes, but it can also provide a sweetness in a child. I discovered today, that my daughter did not need a new costume (in her mind), but was thrilled with the quest to make her own with Mommy. We spent hours together picking out clothes, doing her hair, applying make-up, taking pictures and she was, and still is, overjoyed.
Her experience was so wonderful, it was not so much about the clothes but her hair, make-up and the one-on-one time we shared. I made a big deal about it. She asked for a particular hair style, I just executed and she got to use Mommy’s new Halloween makeup, the trill of her life. She thought she died and went to heaven when she got to wear purple eyeliner!
Buying new costumes are nice but I was starting to feel like she had too many. I highly recommend having a beautiful and free Halloween costume. We really had a wonderful time.
