I think everyone loves vegetable/vegetarian sushi now and again. What’s not to love about an avocado roll?! But for those of us who can’t or don’t eat fish/sea food, there are few items available on a typical sushi menu. Why can’t I get a roll with a little pizzaz? Give me more ingredients and a fun sauce. I promise vegetables can be fun, too! It’s a shame really, most of my vegetarian friends (and I’m sorry but you’re not a vegetarian if you eat fish or sea food) would live off of sushi if there were more options on the menu (knock knock, missed opportunity for most restaurants).
If you live in the DC metro area, there are a handful of places that serve fancy vegetarian sushi rolls. Probably the most famous is Sticky Rice and they’re great, who doesn’t like some tater tots with any meal?! They also have locations in Baltimore, MD and Richmond, VA. Yet, if you’re really looking for some DC area greatness, skip Sticky Rice and travel to Nanami Cafe in Fells Point Baltimore, MD. They have many vegetarian options on their menu, but the show stopper is the Veggie Onion Roll. The roll is filled with Inari, cucumber, cream cheese and topped with a large fried onion and a squeeze of Sriracha. The Veggie Onion roll touches all the bases… it’s warm, fried, creamy with a touch of heat. It’s the kind of sushi all you vegetarians have been looking for all your lives.
